This piece explores the masks we wear to navigate the world, both the ones we consciously choose and the ones society places upon us. Through symbolism and layered imagery, I reflect on the ways identity can become something we conceal, reshape, or fragment to meet expectations. Sometimes we wear more than one mask, adapting ourselves to different spaces, relationships, and versions of who we are expected to be.
For me, the mask represents the tension between self-expression and self-preservation. The desire to be seen authentically can exist alongside the fear of being misunderstood, rejected, or forced into an identity that does not fully represent us. As a queer person of color, I recognize how complicated it can be to navigate spaces where expressing your whole self does not always feel possible.
Ultimately, this piece asks: Who are we beneath the masks, and what happens when we become so accustomed to wearing them that we begin to forget what it feels like to take them off?
It is an exploration of identity, belonging, vulnerability, and the ongoing process of learning to exist as ourselves, even when the world asks us to be someone else.
